The machines are there — but they are set to slower speeds, used selectively, and often left idle while handwork takes precedence.

What follows is a breakdown of the specific sewing techniques that separate high-end Italian production from standard manufacturing — and why those techniques matter for the finished garment.

Hand-stitching: Precision Where Machines Fall Short

Industrial sewing machines excel at straight runs and standardised operations. They struggle with variable tension, curved seams that change direction mid-run, and delicate fabrics that shift under the presser foot. Hand-stitching addresses each of these limitations.

The pick stitch is a prime example. Used most visibly on jacket lapels and pocket flaps, it creates a subtle row of surface stitches that secure the underlying interfacing while leaving an almost imperceptible dimple on the face of the fabric. A machine cannot replicate the tension control required: too tight and the fabric puckers; too loose and the stitch fails to hold. The pick stitch is executed with a single thread and a fine needle, with the sewer adjusting tension stitch by stitch based on how the fabric responds.

Equally important is the pad stitch, which attaches hair canvas interlining to jacket fronts. Industrial production often replaces this with fusible interfacing — a heat-activated adhesive that bonds fabric layers together. The result is a chest piece that lies flat and uniform. Hand-pad stitching, by contrast, creates a three-dimensional shape before the jacket is ever assembled on the body. Each stitch angles slightly differently, building a convex curve that follows the natural contour of the chest. The difference is tangible: a fused jacket front feels like a board; a pad-stitched one moves with the wearer.

Common mistake: pressing fusible interfacing at the wrong temperature or pressure. If the adhesive doesn’t bond fully, the two layers separate after the first dry cleaning. Even minor delamination ruins the structure of a jacket front.

Seam Finishing: What Happens on the Inside

In standard production, seam allowances are typically overlocked and left as-is. The edge will not fray — that much is true — but the seam itself adds bulk and can create a visible ridge beneath the outer fabric, particularly on lightweight materials.

Italian production workshops use several finishing methods depending on the fabric weight and the seam’s position in the garment:

French seams enclose the raw edge entirely within a second seam. The first pass joins the fabric wrong sides together at roughly 3mm; the second pass folds the fabric right sides together and stitches at 6mm, trapping the raw edge inside. French seams are used on lightweight silks, chiffons, and voiles — fabrics where even a single overlocked edge would show through.

Bound seams, sometimes called Hong Kong finishes, wrap each raw edge in a bias-cut strip of lightweight silk or cotton. This method suits medium-weight fabrics such as linen, lightweight wool crepe, and structured cottons. The bias binding absorbs wear better than bare overlocking, and it reduces friction between the seam and the body — an important consideration for unlined garments worn against the skin.

Hand-felled seams appear most often on unlined jackets and coats. The seam allowance on one side is folded under and slip-stitched to the garment body by hand, creating a flat, nearly invisible interior finish. This is labour-intensive — a single unlined jacket might contain four to six metres of hand-felled seams — but the result is a garment interior that looks as finished as the exterior.

Common mistake: using French seams on medium-weight fabrics. A French seam on wool gabardine or linen creates a stiff, raised ridge that telegraphs through the outer fabric. French seams are for fine, translucent fabrics. They are not a universal elegant finish.

Edge Work and Invisible Hems

Edge finishing is where Italian production diverges most visibly from industrial standards. A machine-stitched hem — even a blind hem — leaves a line of stitching on the right side of the fabric. It may be small, but it is visible. And on a garment that costs several thousand euros, visible machine stitching where it does not belong signals a compromise.

The hand-rolled hem on silk scarves is one of the best-known examples. The edge is rolled between thumb and forefinger, stitch by stitch, with the needle catching only a single thread of the fabric body. The hem rolls to roughly one millimetre in diameter. A skilled hemmaker can roll approximately thirty centimetres in an hour. A machine can finish an entire scarf edge in under a minute. The difference is visible at twenty paces: a machine-rolled hem looks thick and uniform; a hand-rolled hem looks like the fabric naturally ends in a fine cord.

For jacket and coat hems, Italian ateliers use a catch stitch — a diagonal, cross-hatched stitch that allows the hem to flex without pulling on the outer fabric. A standard machine straight stitch creates a rigid line; the catch stitch creates a hinge. On a coat worn open, moving in the wind, that hinge is the difference between a hem that rolls naturally and one that buckles.

Tip: match catch stitch tension to the fabric’s bias stretch. A wool crepe stretches more on the bias than a linen canvas. The stitch should move with the fabric, not resist it.

Tools and Machines: Artisan vs. Industrial

The machines found in an Italian atelier are not fundamentally different from those in a factory. They are single-needle lockstitch machines, often older models — Singer 31-series, Durkopp Adler, Juki industrial machines from the 1980s and 1990s. What differs is configuration and usage.

Thread tension is adjusted per fabric, per seam type, per position on the garment. Stitch length varies from 1.5mm for topstitching on shirt collars to 4mm for basting stitches that will be removed later.

The hand tools matter equally. Fine Japanese or Czech hand-sewing needles in sizes 9 to 12; beeswax for strengthening silk thread; a well-worn thimble that fits the sewer’s middle finger precisely; tailor’s chalk cut into a sharp wedge for marking seam lines on wool. These are not romantic details. They are the working tools of someone who needs to see the fabric, feel tension through their fingertips, and adjust in real time — because the fabrics they work with, from super 180s wool to hand-painted silk, do not forgive machine-driven assumptions.

How Technique Affects Garment Drape, Durability, and Feel

The relationship between sewing technique and garment performance is direct and measurable.

The enclosed seam adds fractional weight along the side seams, which subtly pulls the fabric downward and creates a cleaner vertical line. A catch-stitched hem on a wool coat swings rather than flares. These are micro-level differences that compound across an entire garment.

Durability: Hand-felled seams distribute stress across a line of tiny stitches rather than concentrating it at the single thread line of an overlocked edge. A jacket with hand-felled armhole seams can withstand decades of wear without the lining — or the outer fabric — pulling apart at the seam. Bound seams on trousers eliminate the abrasion point where overlocked edges rub against the wearer with each step.

Feel: An unlined jacket with hand-felled interior seams feels smooth against the body because there are no exposed raw edges, no overlocked ridges, no points of friction. A pad-stitched lapel rolls rather than folds, because the internal structure shapes it in three dimensions. These sensations are what separates a garment that simply fits from one that feels like a second skin.

Italian fashion production does not preserve hand-sewing techniques out of sentimentality. It preserves them because the country’s production structure makes it possible — and because the market still rewards the result.
