A capsule collection is a small, tightly edited range of garments designed to work together, usually between eight and twenty five styles, produced in controlled quantities. Riccitelli Milano develops and manufactures capsule collections in Italy for fashion brands, from the first sketch through pattern making, sampling and final production, with the same craftsmanship and the same mills that serve full seasonal collections.
A capsule is the format most brands choose when they want to test a direction, open a new category or launch without committing to a full season. It asks for a producer who can hold quality at a smaller scale, which is exactly how we are built.
What a capsule collection is
A capsule collection is a limited, coherent group of pieces built around one idea. Every style earns its place, the palette is deliberately narrow, and the range reads as a single statement rather than a catalogue. Where a full collection covers a season across many categories, a capsule concentrates the same design intention into fewer, stronger products.
Brands use capsules for a first launch, for a collaboration, for a seasonal drop between main collections, for a category extension such as adding knitwear or leather to an existing range, and for a limited edition tied to an event or a store. In every case the commercial logic is the same: less inventory risk, faster time to market, and a clearer story to tell buyers and customers.
How we produce a capsule collection in Italy
We run a capsule through the same five phases we use for a full collection, compressed into a shorter calendar because the range is smaller.
Concept and design. We start from your brief and direction: where the capsule is going, who it is for and what it has to say. Research, mood, references and fabric ideas are gathered before anything is drawn. We then build the collection plan, deciding how many styles, which categories and how the range holds together, and we settle the colour and cloth story as one single choice rather than two separate decisions.
Materials and sourcing. We compare weights, finishes and hands against what each garment actually has to do, then buy from the Italian houses that supply the best tailoring rooms in the world. Trims, buttons, zips, linings and labels are sourced alongside the cloth. Shrinkage and colour fastness tests are run, quantities are booked in time so production never waits on a delivery, and consumption is measured on the real garment rather than estimated on paper. See our fabric sourcing service in Italy.
Technical development. Flats are drawn with every seam, closure and proportion to scale. First patterns are drafted by hand or in CAD, then cut and checked, and the base size is graded across the full range so the fit holds from the smallest to the largest. Everything lands in a tech pack that carries materials, trims, the measurement chart and the construction. Read more about pattern making and grading and tech pack development.
Sampling and fit. The first prototype is built from the pattern in the cloth or close to it, then tried on a model or a stand, measured, pinned and marked. Corrections go back into the pattern and the construction until the garment sits the way it should. A second sample confirms every change, the size set proves the grading on real bodies, and the approved sample becomes the signed reference the whole production has to match. See sampling and prototyping.
Production. Quantities, sizes and dates are set against the delivery you promised. Cloth is laid, markers placed, every piece cut for the full order, and the garments are assembled and finished in the workshop where that product is made best. Quality control checks every piece against the approved sample at every stage, then the collection is pressed, labelled, tagged and packed to the standard a retailer expects, and shipped to your warehouse or straight to the accounts that ordered.
What we produce in a capsule
A capsule can draw on any of the categories we manufacture, and most do combine two or three. Ready to wear and tailoring, tailored and bespoke suits, knitwear, leather outerwear and jackets, leather goods and bags, footwear, scarves and foulards, eveningwear, embroidery and embellishment, denim, swimwear, lingerie, hats and caps, childrenswear, sportswear, and the labels, tags and packaging that finish the product.
Because all of these sit inside one coordinated network, a capsule that mixes a wool coat, a silk scarf and a knitted piece does not mean three suppliers, three calendars and three quality standards. It means one team, one quotation and one delivery date. Explore everything we make on our Italian fashion manufacturing page.

Quantities, minimums and flexibility
Capsule collections are produced in controlled quantities, and we keep minimums flexible according to the product and the workshop it is made in. A structured tailored jacket and a jersey piece do not carry the same constraints, so we set the run against what the garment actually requires rather than against a single number applied to everything.
This is the difference between a producer built for volume and a production agency built for brands. If you are launching, testing a category or serving a limited audience, we can start at the scale that makes sense for you and grow the run when the collection proves itself. Why produce a capsule collection in Italy
Italy makes the best clothes in the world through hundreds of small specialists, each one exceptional at a single thing. That fragmentation is exactly what makes producing here difficult for a brand working from outside. A capsule made of six styles can easily involve a mill in Biella, a knitwear workshop in Carpi, a leather atelier in Tuscany and a tailoring room in Lombardia.
We hold that network together so a brand deals with one team instead of twenty workshops. One quotation, one calendar, and one person answering when something needs a decision. The provenance is real, the craft is the same craft that serves the largest houses, and the coordination is ours rather than yours.
How long a capsule collection takes
A capsule collection typically moves from approved design to delivered production in about three to six months, depending on the categories involved, the fabrics chosen and how many fitting rounds the garments need. Cloth availability is the most common variable, which is why we book materials early. Tailoring and leather ask for more development time than jersey or knitwear, and a size set that has to be proven across a wide range adds a round of sampling.
We build the calendar backwards from the delivery date you have promised, so that sampling, cloth booking and production sit where they have to sit rather than where they happen to fall.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a capsule collection in fashion?
A capsule collection is a small, tightly edited range of garments designed to work together, usually between eight and twenty five styles built around one idea and a deliberately narrow palette. It is produced in controlled quantities and is the format brands use to launch, to test a direction or to open a new category without committing to a full season.
How many pieces should a capsule collection have?
Most capsules sit between eight and twenty five styles. Fewer than eight rarely reads as a collection to buyers and press, and more than twenty five starts to carry the cost and the complexity of a full season. The right number depends on how many categories you are covering and whether the capsule has to stand alone or sit next to an existing range.
Can you produce a capsule collection in small quantities?
Yes. Minimums stay flexible according to the product and the workshop it is made in, because a structured tailored jacket and a jersey piece do not carry the same constraints. We set the run against what the garment actually requires, which is how a brand can launch at a sensible scale and grow the run once the collection proves itself.
How long does it take to produce a capsule collection in Italy?
Around three to six months from approved design to delivered production, depending on the categories, the fabrics and how many fitting rounds the garments need. Cloth availability is usually the deciding factor, so materials are booked early. Tailoring and leather need more development time than jersey or knitwear.
Do you develop the capsule collection or only manufacture it?
Both, and either one on its own. Some brands arrive with a finished tech pack and want production only. Others arrive with a direction and a mood and we take it through concept, design, sourcing, pattern making, sampling and production. A brand hires us and we answer for the result at every stage we handle.
Which garments and accessories can go into a capsule?
Any of the categories we manufacture, and most capsules combine several. Ready to wear and tailoring, knitwear, leather outerwear, leather goods and bags, footwear, silk scarves and foulards, eveningwear, embroidery, denim, swimwear, lingerie, hats and caps, childrenswear and sportswear, together with the labels, tags and packaging that finish the product.
Is a capsule collection cheaper than a full collection?
A capsule carries less total commitment because there are fewer styles and smaller runs, so the exposure is lower. The development work per style is comparable, since a pattern, a size set and a sample are needed whether you make six styles or sixty. What a capsule really buys you is speed and reduced inventory risk rather than a lower standard of making.
