Occasionwear is bought for a single day and judged in photographs that last, which is why it tolerates less than any other category.

What occasionwear has to survive
Hours, not minutes. An occasion dress is worn for eight or ten hours, sitting, dancing and being embraced. A bodice that grips, a strap that slips or a zip that presses into the back will ruin the day regardless of how the garment looked in the fitting room.
Flash photography. Fabrics behave differently under a camera flash than under daylight. A lining that is invisible in a showroom can read straight through in a photograph, and a black that looks black to the eye can photograph blue. This is tested, not assumed.
Movement. The garment has to look right seated, which is where most occasion pieces fail. A skirt that rides up, a slit that opens too far or a neckline that gapes when the wearer leans forward are all pattern faults, and all of them appear only when the sample is worn rather than photographed on a stand.
Weight of embellishment. Beading and appliqué add real weight and drag the garment down over an evening. Where that weight is carried is a construction decision taken at the first pattern.

Internal construction is the product
What makes an occasion piece comfortable for a whole evening is invisible: a boned inner bodice that carries the shape, a waist stay that takes the weight off the shoulders, cups and support built into the garment, and closures placed where they will not press against the spine when seated.
These are not finishing touches. They are decided at the first pattern and they are the reason a well made occasion dress can be worn for ten hours and a badly made one cannot be worn for three.
Cloth
Crepe for weight and a clean column, silk and satin for movement and shine, mikado for structure, tulle and organza for volume, velvet for depth, and lace from the mills that supply couture. Colour matching across the outer cloth, the lining, the thread and any beading has to be exact, and it has to be checked under both daylight and artificial light, because occasionwear is mostly seen under the second. How an occasionwear project runs
Flats and internal construction drawn together, then the first pattern drafted flat or draped on the stand. A toile is made for anything structured before the real cloth is cut. The sample is then worn: seated, standing, moving, and photographed with flash. Corrections go into the pattern, a second sample confirms them, the size set proves the grading, and the approved sample becomes the production reference. Yes. Beading and appliqué add real weight that pulls on the garment over an evening, so where that weight is carried has to be planned into the pattern. Hand work also sets the critical path in the calendar, because it cannot be compressed.
Can you produce occasionwear across a wide size range?
Yes, and it is essential in this category, where the customer base is broader than in ready to wear. The size set is proven on real bodies rather than graded on a rule, because structured pieces fail at the ends of a range first.
